A total of 89 commercial vehicles were taken out of service across the province in a 24-hour period during Operation Corridor 2012, a joint initiative between the Ontario Provincial Police and the Ministry of Transportation.

The campaign started June 14 and wrapped up June 15. It targeted aggressive commercial drivers and unsafe commercial vehicles.

Officers laid a total of 372 charges throughout Ontario, including 68 speeding charges and 193 equipment charges, in addition to the vehicles that were taken off the road due to equipment issues or hours of service violations.

In comparison, last year during Operation Corridor, a total of 320 charges were laid for various Criminal Code and Highway Traffic Act offences. Of those charges, 86 of them were for speeding.

Operation Corridor is an annual provincewide commercial-vehicle road safety initiative that focuses on high visibility, enforcement and education strategies on highways and roads. The 24-hour initiative ran from 6 a.m.on June 14 to 6 a.m. on June 15.
