Thanks to the actions of a 17-year-old girl, a man safely reached the shores of the Vermillion River in Capreol after his small fishing boat capsized.

The girl, who is trained as a lifeguard, noticed the older man, who appeared to be panicking and in distress, in the water next to his boat just after 5 p.m. June 23. At one point, she lost sight of him, causing her to think he'd slipped beneath the water.

She swam to the middle of the river to locate him, and found him clinging to the other side of the boat with no lifejacket on.

The man advised the teen he was a weak swimmer and was afraid of the water.

The girl kept him calm, and brought him, along with the capsized boat, to shore. A dog who was in the boat with the man was located in good health.

The teen was thanked by police for her assistance and bravery.
