A 21-month-old toddler died July 23 after being found face down in shallow water on the shore of South Bay on the Manitoulin Island, according to the Ontario Provincial Police.

A young couple and their six children went on a family picnic to attend the couple's anniversary. The parents and their children were playing along the shores when the mother looked away momentarily to change the diaper of one of the other infants, according to a news release.

When she looked back, the 21-month-old boy was gone, and a quick search of the area found the infant floating face down in the shallow water. The father immediately started CPR while 911 was called.

Police and ambulance attended and the child was taken to Mindemoya Hospital and pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination is going to be conducted on July 25 at Health Sciences North to determine the exact cause of death.

The investigation is being conducted by members of the Manitoulin OPP.
