Suspect flees from scene of collision

A 25-year-old man who was allegedly involved in a collision Aug. 25 and fled the scene has been charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident and public mischief after he tried to report the vehicle stolen shortly after the crash, said Greater Sudbury Police Service.

The collision happened around 3 p.m. at the intersection of Lasalle Boulevard and Rideau Street. When police arrived, they were told the driver of one of the vehicles fled the scene and parked the heavily damaged vehicle near Drummond Street.

Witnesses at the scene had talked to the driver, and one witness used a cellphone to photograph the suspect.

With the assistance of the K9 unit, officers located the vehicle, but not the driver. Shortly afterwards, the vehicle's owner, later identified as the suspect driver, attempted to report the vehicle as stolen.

Further investigation revealed he was prohibited from driving for a previous impaired conviction.
