Officers were out in full force on highways and waterways making sure everyone had a safe weekend. A total of eight RIDE initiatives were conducted, with a combined total of 558 vehicles, boats and ATVs checked.
While only one person was charged with impaired, five people were fined for not complying with the Liquor Licence Act. Four people were charged for not having proper insurance, and three people were charged for not having lifejackets in a boat. One ATV rider was also charged.
“After a long and busy summer on the Island, I wanted to make sure that the last holiday weekend ... went as safe as possible,” said Manitoulin OPP detachment commander Staff Sgt. Kevin Webb. “I am happy to report that the weekend was mainly uneventful aside from one serious motor vehicle collision.
“Officers were out being visible and making contact with the public. This, in turn, acts a deterrent for those that may choose to break the law, plus it makes law-abiding citizens feel safe. I am extremely happy to report that the weekend went well with no tragic loss of life. Now that summer is over, we won’t let up, and we will continue to be out there making our communities safe.”
