Blaze demolishes garage, two cars and a RV

A mid-afternoon fire in Lively on Sept. 9 destroyed vehicles and a garage, but no one was hurt, Greater Sudbury firefighters say.

George Lalonde, platoon chief with the force, said the fire department received several 911 calls about a fire on Laura Avenue around 1:50 p.m.

“When firefighters arrived on the scene, we found a fully involved garage, RV and car fire,” Lalonde said. “Four stations responded – Copper Cliff station, two Walden stations and the Whitefish station.”

Lalonde said the preliminary investigation is pointing to an RV on the property as the source of the fire. It then spread to the garage, a 2005 Corvette on the property, as well as a 2011 Ford Edge. Both cars, the RV and the garage were completely destroyed.

“We just interviewed the homeowners, so we’re still in the preliminary stages of our investigation,” he said. “Obviously, the garage, car and RV are a total loss.”
The homeowners did have insurance, Lalonde added.

“There were no injuries. There was someone at home, but they were notified by someone walking by that there was a fire. So they left the house right away.”
Early damage estimates are in the $100,000 range, he said.

“With just the vehicles alone, you’re probably close to ($100,000),” Lalonde said, adding that with all the items in the garage, the estimate may rise to about $125,000.

The fire was largely extinguished by around 3:30 p.m.

“There are a couple of hotspots still,” he said. “There’s a few things we still have to move around before we go.”

Lalonde said once the fire was definitely out, a skeleton crew would remain to help with the investigation. He hoped to finish all the work by early evening Sept. 9.
