A 58-year-old Denmark man visiting Canada has been charged with careless driving after he allegedly hit an elderly man and his dog and then fled the scene, said the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police.

The dog was killed in the hit and run. The 71-year-old man was treated at hospital and released.

Police responded to the incident Sept. 11 at abut 8:09 a.m. It happened in the parking lot of St. Bernard's Catholic Church on Hayward Street in Little Current.

After broadcasting a description of the vehicle to other police units on the Island, it didn't take long for an officer to spot a vehicle fitting that

description. The vehicle was stopped on Highway 540 near Bidwell Road in Billings Township. The driver was arrested.

Further investigation revealed the driver was visiting Canada from Denmark. He was driving a rental vehicle from Quebec.
