UPDATED Sept. 16 at 9:10 a.m.

A 33-year-old tractor-trailer driver from Amqui, Quebec has been charged with careless driving after causing a four-vehicle collision on Highway 17 just after 1 p.m. Sept. 15.

The tractor-trailer failed to negotiate the merge from the southeast bypass near Coniston, and in doing so, rolled over onto its side, spilling its load of particle board.

Two westbound motorcyclists and a westbound SUV who were stopped at the traffic light on Highway 17 were struck, according to a press release from the OPP.

The motorcylists, an 18-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, both from Coniston, were transported to Health Sciences North, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

The highway was reopened at around 8 p.m.

UPDATED Sept. 15 at 10:40 p.m.

Highway 17 was fully reopened to traffic as of 8 p.m. Sept. 15.

Original story:

A motorcyclist was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg after an accident on Highway 17, near Coniston Sept. 15.

A transport truck had been attempting to turn east onto Hwy. 17 from the highway's southeast bypass, when it flipped over, according to an OPP officer at the scene.

Two motorcyclists waiting at the light before heading west towards Sudbury had to jump out of the way of the truck. One of them was injured by plywood falling off of the back of the truck.

The highway has been closed between the bypass and Coniston since about 1 p.m.

As of about 4:20 p.m., the road was still closed as tow trucks attempted to flip over the transport truck — which spanned most of the width of the highway — and remove it from the accident scene.

The motorcycles are also being loaded onto tow trucks.

Greater Sudbury Police, who are assisting the OPP with traffic control, say traffic is being re-routed at Second Avenue at Hwy. 17 in Coniston to Bancroft Drive. Traffic approaching this intersection from the city towards Coniston is being re-routed up Moonlight Drive to Bancroft Drive.
