NOCC was initiated as part of the local police service's ongoing efforts to raise community awareness about local crime trends, according to a news release.
Crime analysts review data from the service's records management system to determine emerging trends in various areas of the city. Based on this analysis, an officer along with volunteer auxiliary officers attend the identified neighbourhoods and canvass door-to-door providing pamphlets of educational material that offer preventative tips.
The intent is to raise the awareness level of the public and assist in reducing victimization opportunities.
On Sept. 19, officers canvassed the Garson neighbourhood and provided pamphlets to about 100 residences.
It's a service that will take place every Wednesday in recognized areas of the region. GSPS is also training COPS volunteers to participate in providing this service.
