It took 20 firefighters in seven vehicles to put out a blaze at 189 Pine St.

All 18 units in the three-story boarding house experienced "major" fire damage and "severe" smoke damage. Fire officials estimate the total damage at $250,000.

Twelve of the 18 units were occupied at the time of the blaze, according to fire platoon chief Chris Stokes. Everyone home at the time of the fire was evacuated — two were taken to hospital, and have since been released.

The Fire Marshal's Office is continuing to investigate the cause of the blaze. The fire closed the downtown street Oct. 7 around 4 p.m. Greater Sudbury Police and other emergency services were on hand.

The road was closed to pedestrian and vehicle traffic from Pine to College streets, as well as Hartman Street between Pine and Elm.
