OPP issue more than 5,000 seatbelt charges

The Ontario Provincial Police laid more than 5,000 seatbelt charges since Sept. 24 as part of its fall campaign, according to a news release.

Those are preliminary numbers, as the campaign wrapped up Oct. 6. Non-compliance with seatbelt use remains one of the four major causes of fatalities in motor vehicle collisions along with speeding, impaired driving and driving while distracted.

Although the campaign has ended, officers will continue to enforce seatbelt laws and all other traffic safety laws throughout the year, in support of their Provincial Traffic Safety Program and in their ongoing effort to save lives, said the OPP.
