Greater Sudbury Fire Services are warning the public about the danger of careless smoking after two people were evacuated from their apartment early Saturday morning.

Firefighters say smoking was the cause of the Notre Dame Avenue blaze that cause about $5,000 in smoke damage to the three-story brick apartment building.

Firefighters responded around 4:40 in the morning Dec. 29, with five emergency vehicles and 13 firefighters arriving on the scene to extinguish the blaze. The three-story building has 30 residential units, but only the two occupants where the fire occurred had to be evacuated.

“Careless smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths,” the fire department said in a media release. “Encourage smokers to smoke outside. Never smoke in bed. Use large deep ashtrays that can’t be easily knocked over.”
