Officers respond to complaints of excessive speeding

By: Sudbury Northern Life Staff

It would seem the unpredictable weather and varying road conditions have not stopped local drivers from practising improper driving behaviours, said Greater Sudbury Police Service.

Officers operating marked and stealth-marked patrol vehicles handed out 149 provincial offence notices from Jan. 13-16 during a safety blitz. The majority of offences were for speeding, while several people were charged with distracted driving for using their cellphones.

Police said in response to public complaints of excessive speeding on Municipal Road 80, officers set up on a stretch of roadway between Lasalle Boulevard and Dominion Drive during the blitz.

Drivers are reminded that during the winter season, roads are not at their optimum, said police. Posted speed limits are the maximum allowable and there is no harm in driving at, or slightly below the speed limit — particularly when road conditions dictate.

The Traffic Management Unit will continue its January enforcement campaign focusing on improper winter driving behaviours and aggressive driving while urging motorists to obey the rules of the road.
