Two Greater Sudbury Police officers are being dispatched to Thunder Bay to investigate a complaint about an officer in that city.

Greater Sudbury Police Chief Frank Elsner confirmed Jan. 18 that Sudbury was asked to investigate allegations that an officer on the Thunder Bay force assaulted a 14-year-old boy earlier this month at a hockey tournament.

Thunder Bay police will pay all costs associated with the investigation, Elsner said, as is standard when one police force is asked to investigate another force.

A release from Thunder Bay Police Service on Jan. 16 said they received the complaint from a parent regarding an alleged altercation involving an off duty police officer.

“It is alleged that the off-duty TBPS officer became involved in an altercation with a parent and the parent’s son at a youth hockey tournament on Jan. 10, 2013,” the release says.

“There were no injuries in this incident. The officer is now on administrative duties while the incident is under investigation.”

Thunder Bay Police Chief J.P. Levesque asked for help from Sudbury police last week after the service received the initial complaint.
