A 17-year-old driver was clocked travelling at 157 kilometres an hour in a posted 80-km/h zone, said Greater Sudbury Police Service.

Police observed on Jan. 23 a 2001 GMC Jimmy travelling south on Municipal Road 80 at an incredibly high rate of speed, according to a press release. Road conditions were snow-packed and icy at the time.

The teenaged driver has been charged with stunt driving for travelling in excess of 50 kilometres an hour over the posted speed limit, as well as speeding.

The vehicle was impounded for seven days, and his G2 licence has been suspended for seven days.

Police are reminding the motoring public that speed kills, and the faster you drive the more likely you are to be injured or killed in a collision.

The Highway Traffic Act is clear as to the penalties for stunt driving.

Section 172 of the Highway Traffic Act states: Every person who contravenes subsection (1) is guilty of an offence and on conviction is liable to a fine of not less than $2,000 and not more than $10,000 or to imprisonment for a term of not more than six months, or to both, and in addition his or her driver’s license may be suspended,
(a) on a first conviction under this section, for not more than two years; or
(b) on a subsequent conviction under this section, for not more than 10 years.
