The Ontario Provincial Police is warning residents that feeding wild animals only encourages them to stay within the community.

This warning is in response to an incident in Chapleau, where a school employee leaving the school at about 8 p.m. observed a wolf coming toward them.

The employee went back into the school to phone police.

Officers patrolled the area and found that wolves were feeding on garbage left out for pickup. It had also been reported that people were feeding the wolves.

Ensure your garbage is secure and not placed at curbside until the morning of pickup.

Please use caution when out during the evening and night-time hours. Do not leave small pets unattended outside.

Keep in mind these animals are in search of food and will return to areas that provided nourishment in the past. The OPP said it will respond to emergency calls about wild animals if there is an immediate threat to the public.
