Police identify body found in Hwy. 17 ditch

The Ontario Provincial Police has identified the body of a 44-year-old Elliot Lake man found in the ditch on Highway 17 in Serpent River as Gerard Martin Smits.

Smit's body was located on Feb. 15. The OPP is still investigating the events leading up to his death.

A post-mortem is scheduled for today in Sault Ste. Marie.

Anyone with relevant information about this event is asked to call the East Algoma OPP or to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (1-800-222-8477).
