Greater Sudbury Police handed out several tickets and warnings to snowmobilers after conducting spot checks at the trail near Gravel Drive in Hanmer March 2.

In total, 180 snowmobiles were checked.

Police handed out five tickets for riding on the trail with no trail pass.

As well, 28 warnings were issued for a combination of other offences, including loud mufflers, validation stickers, speeding on the trail, numbers not affixed to the sled, driving on the road under 16 years of age and failing to produce an insurance card.

Police also conducted spot checks on 512 vehicles March 2 at Municipal Road 80 at Glenn Street in Hanmer, Municipal Road 80 at Valleyview Road in Val Caron, and Falconbridge Road between Lasalle Boulevard and The Kingsway in New Sudbury.

Five drivers were handed tickets for driver's licence infractions, four for speeding, four for document infractions, two for graduated licence infractions, two for equipment deficiencies, and one for disobeying a sign.

Although 10 drivers were given roadside alcohol screening tests, none of them were charged with impaired driving.

The March 2 spot checks were made possible by donations from Action Sudbury and the Snowmobile Trail Officer Patrol (STOP), which paid the salaries of four extra duty officers.
