Name of Boxing Day fire victim released

Greater Sudbury Police have released the name of the 43-year-old man who died in an apartment fire on Dupont Street in the Donovan on Dec. 26. Firefighters were called to the apartment building at noon on Boxing Day.

Greater Sudbury Police have released the name of the 43-year-old man who died in an apartment fire on Dupont Street in the Donovan on Dec. 26.

Firefighters were called to the apartment building at noon on Boxing Day. Damage estimates are at around $50,000. It took 17 firefighters and six trucks for Greater Sudbury Fire Services to control the blaze.

The fire was mainly contained to a basement apartment, although other parts of the building suffered smoke damage.

The victim, Philias Thisdelle, 43, was taken to Health Sciences North, but passed away from his injuries shortly after arrival at the hospital, police report.

A post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death was scheduled for Dec. 27. Greater Sudbury Police and the Fire Marshals Office are investigating the cause of the fire.

Funeral arrangements for Thisdelle have been made with Jackson and Barnard Funeral Home.

The building had six tenants. Survivors are being cared for by the Red Cross.
