Texting 911 will soon be available in Sudbury

Effective March 18 2014, those among the deaf, deafened, hard of hearing and speech impaired ( DHHSI) community in Canada can register their cellphones with their Wireless Service Providers in preparation for texting with 911.

While texting 911 with a cellphone is currently not available in Greater Sudbury, preparations are being made to bring the service to the Nickel City.
Effective March 18 2014, those among the deaf, deafened, hard of hearing and speech impaired ( DHHSI) community in Canada can register their cellphones with their Wireless Service Providers in preparation for texting with 911.

T911 is not currently available in Greater Sudbury or surrounding areas, and will only be available once the required network upgrades have been completed. An announcement will be made when T911 becomes available in our area, said Greater Sudbury Police Service.

Voice calling remains the only way to communicate with 911 services for a person that is not deaf, deafened, hard of hearing or with speech impairment. TTY services are still available for those members of the DHHSI community that use or require this technology.
