Credit Union robber still at large

Greater Sudbury Police Service wouldn't call the hand-made device used during the June 11 robbery of the Northern Credit Union in Capreol a bomb, but officers are working to identify its contents.

Staff Sgt. Mike Chapman said the suspect left the device after making off with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police disposed of it in the parking lot.

The suspect, who is still at large, entered the bank around 4:30 p.m. He used an umbrella to hide his face, and told tellers he had a bomb strapped to his body. He then fled with the cash.

Police said he was seen getting into a small grey or beige car. Police believe he is no longer in the area, and there is no cause for public concern.

Chapman said an employee inside the bank overheard the suspect say he had recently lost his job.

The suspect is described as being 6-0 tall, heavy set and wearing a black hoodie, black scarf, baseball hat and sunglasses.

The incident is still under investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at 222-TIPS (8477), online at www.sudburycrimestoppers.com or by texting TIPSUD and the information to CRIMES (274637).
