Homemade pipe bomb and other weapons seized in search warrant

A 20-year-old man has been charged in connection with the suspicious device found during a police raid on a Spruce Street home June 19, said Greater Sudbury Police Service today.

Brennan Boucher is charged with making explosives, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a prohibited device, importing into Canada a prohibited weapon and importing into Canada a prohibited device without authority. He was scheduled for bail court today.

Boucher's arrest stems from a weeklong investigation after a package ordered from the U.S. en route to Boucher's address in Sudbury was intercepted by Canada Border Services. The package contained a prohibited magazine (or clip for a firearm) and ammunition. Border services contacted Greater Sudbury Police Service, said Chapman.

“Members of our Break, Enter and Robbery unit executed a search warrant (at the Spruce Street address),” Chapman said.

A search of the residence located several prohibited magazines, a homemade explosive device, a prohibited shotgun and a homemade conducted energy weapon. No one was injured in the incident.

The Ontario Provincial Police bomb-disposal unit was called in to dispose of the explosive device.

“This makes us realize what's possible in our community,” Chapman said. “Explosive devices such as these are capable of causing significant damage and loss of life.”

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police.
