Drivers are legally responsible for ensuring passengers under the age of 16 are properly buckled up — in a seatbelt assembly or in an appropriate child car seat or booster seat. The number of occupants in a vehicle is limited to the number of seatbelts — one person, one seat belt — it’s the law.

Although the campaign runs from Sept. 24 to Oct. 10, seatbelt enforcement has been and will continue to be a primary focus for the OPP.

The penalty for a seatbelt offence is $240 and two demerit points. Traffic collisions remain the leading cause of injury-related deaths in Ontario and the OPP is reminding the motoring public that wearing seat belts save lives.
