A police officer received minor injuries Tuesday evening in Coniston when a suspect hopped back into a vehicle and an accomplice tried to drive away.

The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Coniston Mall.

“Plainclothes officers (wearing clearly marked large Police identifiers on their clothing) in unmarked vehicles had stopped a suspect vehicle on Amanda Street,” a release from Greater Sudbury Police said.

“The passenger had exited the vehicle and officers were effecting an arrest when the 28-year-old female suspect jumped back into the vehicle and the 21-year-old male suspect, who was still in the driver’s seat, reversed his vehicle at a high rate of speed into an unmarked police vehicle.”

The arresting officer was caught by the open door and was dragged a short distance, the release said. Another officer in an unmarked vehicle was able to pin the vehicle, stopping it from moving and preventing further injury. Both suspects were taken into custody.

The officer was taken to Health Sciences North, where he was treated and released for non-life threatening injuries.

The 28-year-old woman is being held for a bail hearing and is facing charges of trafficking in narcotics, resisting arrest, possession of Fentanyl and three counts of breaching court orders.

The 21-year-old man is also being held for a bail hearing, and will face charges for dangerous driving, resisting arrest, two counts of assaulting a police officer with a weapon (the vehicle) and possession of Fentanyl.
