Greater Sudbury police caught two drunk drivers and charged one young driver with having alcohol in his bloodstream in roadside spotchecks over the weekend.

More than 200 cars were stopped in several areas of the city, including Minnow Lake, New Sudbury, downtown, the Flour Mill and several locations in Capreol. The program is aimed at reducing property damage, injuries and death caused by impaired driving and are focused in high-incident and high-complaint areas of Greater Sudbury.

In Saturday's checks, 95 drivers were pulled over on Howey Drive at Downing Street, Lasalle Boulevard and Elm Street in Sudbury. Two drivers were issued 90-day driver's license suspensions and face criminal charges for having more than the legal limit of alcohol in their bloodstream. Nine people were also charged with Highway Traffic Act offences, which include such things as not wearing a seatbelt.

On Friday, one young driver was given a 24-hour suspension for having alcohol in his bloodstream, which is against the law for young drivers.

“This was in contravention of conditions imposed on young drivers to have a blood alcohol concentration of zero when they drive a vehicle,” police said in a news release. “The young driver was issued a provincial offence notice resulting in $110 fine.”

Another seven drivers were charged with Highway Traffic Act offences, out of a total of 112 motorists who were pulled over. Friday's checks were conducted in Capreol on Dennie Street, Kelly Street, Municipal Road 84 and Young Street, as well as Notre Dame Avenue in the Flour Mill.

Police encourage residents to take advantage of Operation Lookout, a Canada-wide, year-round public awareness program that encourages the public and businesses to call 911 if they suspect an impaired driver.
