Residents are being encouraged to not confront people they think might be committing a crime, after a witness scared off a man allegedly breaking into vehicles around Martindale Road, said Greater Sudbury Police Service.

A 24-year-old man was seen trying to gain entry into vehicles on Martindale Road around 8:47 p.m. Someone scared him off, but he was later stopped by police. He was found to have been intoxicated, and was in possession of a large quantity of loose change, Canadian currency, gas cards and gift cards.

He was arrested for theft and possession of property obtained by crime.

Police also found a prohibited flick knife on the suspect, and he was subsequently charged with possession of a prohibited weapon.

“Citizens are reminded in situations such as this that it is prudent to not confront someone because you may be putting yourself in harm’s way,” said a news release. “Criminals generally seek access to easy targets such as unlocked vehicles. One of the simplest ways to deter thefts from vehicles is to keep them locked.”
