Sometimes it pays to be at work a little later.

A Lively business owner had closed up shop for the day, but was still in the building when he heard a vehicle pull into the back parking lot.

Shortly, the owner could hear what sounded like a grinder being used on the door at the back of the building. After the owner let the would-be thief know the building was not as empty as he'd hoped, the suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.

The store owner provided a description of the vehicle that he saw driving away, and officers from the Break, Enter & Robbery Unit (BEAR) were able to confirm the make and colour of the vehicle (a white Ford pickup) with video surveillance from neighbouring businesses.

A truck matching the description was later observed at a local hotel, police say.

The investigation resulted in the arrest of a 34-year-old Hamilton man. He is charged with attempt to commit the indictable offence of break and enter, and possession of break-in instruments. He was held for bail court.
