A Coniston couple in their 80s suffered minor injuries after a man tried to rob them in their own home, say Greater Sudbury Police.

The attempted robbery happened shortly after 9 p.m. March 16. The suspect knocked on the couple's home, and they let him in.

“The elderly wife thought it was someone she knew and let him in. It was not,” said police in a news release.

Members of the Criminal Investigations Division and the Break, Enter and Robbery (BEAR) Unit are investigating, and officers are also canvassing the area.

From information obtained at the scene, the suspect is described as Caucasian male, Caucasian, between 5-foot-8 and six feet tall, in his early 20s with a thin build. He was wearing dark-coloured clothing.

The victims were treated at hospital and released.

"Police do not believe this to be a random act and that the suspect chose this residence in advance," the release said. "Community safety is a priority and citizens in the area should feel secure; however, everyone is asked to remain vigilant and to report suspicious activities to police."

The suspect was wearing a hoodie and glasses hiding his face. He immediately cut the phone lines with knife.

He told the couple, "I have a knife, and want your money."

The wife was able to escape and she ran out of the house to the neighbours for help. They called police.

The suspect fled before police arrived. The couple was taken to HSN to have their injuries treated.

Anyone with information regarding this home invasion is asked to call police, 705-675-9171.
