Most retailers are not permitted to be open for business on a legislated holiday, under the rules of the Retail Business Holidays Act.

The act requires retail businesses to close on nine specified days each year. They are:

-New Year’s Day (Jan. 1)
-Family Day (the third Monday of Feb.)
-Good Friday (the Friday before Easter Sunday – typically in March or April)
-Easter Sunday (typically in March or April)
-Victoria Day (the last Monday before or on May 24)
-Canada Day (July 1)
-Labour Day (first Monday in Sept)
-Thanksgiving Day (the second Monday in Oct.)
-Christmas Day (Dec. 25)

May 18 is Victoria Day, and as per the Retail Business Holidays Act, most businesses will be closed.

The Retail Business Holidays Act is administered by the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services and enforced by local police services.

To inquire about which types of retail operations are exempt from the act, refer to the Retail Business Holidays Act at www.e-laws.gov.on.ca or phone the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services toll-free at 1-800-889-9768.
