Just after 5 p.m. yesterday, Greater Sudbury Police received a distress call from the 48-year-old man. He said he had gone out riding in the wooded area north of New Sudbury, but after cycling for only a few kilometres, he became disoriented in the network of trails.

After spending hours trying to find his way home and becoming exhausted, the man used his cellphone to call police for help.

Using the data captured from the phone, 911 police communicators triangulated the general location. Front line police officers supported by specially trained search and rescue officers were dispatched to the semi-remote area.

While the man was guided by phone to the southeast shoreline of Whitson Lake, officers using a police boat rescued him prior to sunset. He was not injured.
