Victim of fatal Lavigne crash identified as 30-year-old Sudbury man

The victim of a fatal June 16 single vehicle collision on Highway 64 in Lavigne has been identified as 30-year-old Thomas Caleb Fremlin of Sudbury.

The victim of a fatal June 16 single vehicle collision on Highway 64 in Lavigne has been identified as 30-year-old Thomas Caleb Fremlin of Sudbury.

Because of the involvement of the West Nipissing Police, the circumstances surrounding his death are being investigated by the Special Investigations Unit.

At around 11:30 p.m. June 16, police received a call regarding a Jeep Cherokee being driven by a man. Officers were dispatched to locate the man, the SIU said in a press release.

An officer saw the vehicle, and attempted to follow it. He lost sight of the vehicle soon after. At around 11:45 p.m., police received a report that the Jeep had struck a tree on Highway 64. The vehicle was engulfed in flames.

The driver of the Jeep — Fremlin — died of his injuries.

The SIU has assigned four investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist to probe the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an arms-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
