A gorgeous afternoon for fishing turned into a frightening ordeal for a father and son on June 29, after the boat they were in capsized on Lake Mindemoya.

At around 3 p.m. yesterday, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Manitoulin Detachment were called out to a report of a capsized boat on Mindemoya, near the Stanley Park Resort in Central Manitoulin Township.

The father and his eight-year-old son were fishing in a small hard plastic boat near shore when a fishing hook became caught in the boy's lifejacket. The father removed the lifejacket to get the hook loose, when the boat capsized sending them both into the water. The father surfaced, but the child did not.

Witnesses called police. By the time EMS arrived, bystanders had found the child on shore. The boy had taken on water. He was immediately transported to Mindemoya by ambulance and then airlifted to hospital.
