The Ontario Provincial Police, Sudbury Detachment, have released the name of the man who died July 16 in a head-on collision on Highway 69.

At 1:48 a.m. that day, officers responded to a transport truck and vehicle collision that occurred on Highway 69 about three kilometers south of Highway 637 (Killarney Turnoff) in the two-lane construction zone.

The OPP said a 2014 Freightliner transport truck was northbound on Hwy 69 when a southbound Chevrolet van crossed the centre line and struck the transport truck head on. The driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the transport truck received minor injuries.

The deceased has been identified as Walter George Blight, 72, of Elliot Lake.

Highway 69 north and south bound lanes were closed in both directions for nine hours while the investigation of the collision was being conducted. There was a detour routing traffic around the collision scene.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Sudbury OPP with the assistance of the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit.
