The Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) and the Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) have partnered together with the goal to reduce Impaired Boating Incidents/Deaths this long weekend.

Drinking and boating account for approximately 40 per cent of all boating-related fatalities on Canadian waterways.

To raise awareness and reduce alcohol-related boating deaths, the CSBC and GSPS are launching the third year of an initiative called “Operation Dry Water”. Its goal is to discourage this dangerous practice.

With the summer boating season in high gear, the August long weekend is the ideal time to remind Canadian boaters about the risks of drinking and boating.

Combined with sun, wind, waves, and the rocking motion of the boat, the effects of alcohol on the water can be greatly increased.

Federal statutes dictate that, whether or not your water craft is motorized, you can be charged with Impaired Operation of a Vessel under the Criminal Code of Canada if your blood alcohol level exceeds the .08 threshold.

Operation Dry Water is a national awareness and enforcement campaign focused on reducing the number of alcohol and drug-related accidents and fatalities and fostering a stronger, more visible deterrent to alcohol and drug use on the water.

The GSPS Marine Unit will be patrolling various waterways on the weekend to promote safe boating practices. Ensure that you have all your required safety equipment before heading out on the water and do no operate your boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Operation Dry Water has been made possible through the support of Transport Canada’s Office of Boating Safety. For additional information on boating safety refer to www.csbc.ca.
