Greater Sudbury Police are investigating after an incident where a bear was inhumanely killed in the New Sudbury area earlier this week.

Police were called after the deceased bear was located in the driveway of a home on Rutherglen Crescent in the late morning of July 30.

The Ministry of Natural Resources was called in, and determined that the bear had been shot. The examination also revealed the bear had suffered, which causes a greater risk to public safety, should the bear react.

It is believe that this incident happened in the late evening hours of July 29. The discharging of a firearm in a populated neighbourhood is extremely dangerous, a police press release said. It is unknown at this time if members of the public were present or put in danger due to this act.

MNR recommendations for the safe and quick dispatch of a bear were not followed. Neither the MNR or Greater Sudbury Police were contacted to assist with this incident.

Bears can only be killed when there is an immediate danger to public safety, and not other option is readily available. There is no evidence at this time to suggest that these circumstances existed, police say.

The investigation is ongoing.
