Sudbury Police are requesting the public's assistance to find a a suspect who stole – and later crashed – a Dodge Caravan with modifications to accommodate a wheelchair.
Police said the white 2000 Dodge Caravan was stolen Saturday, Aug. 1 on Haig Street.
Members of the public spotted it traveling a high speed on Falconbridge Highway Sunday, where it was involved in a single-vehicle collision and was heavily damaged.
Witnesses informed police, who then contacted the registered owner – who found out then the minivan had been stolen.
The person who stole and crashed the Dodge Caravan fled from the scene and remains at large.
The minivan's owner spent around $16,000 to convert the vehicle so it could accommodate their quadriplegic son.
Police said the criminal's act has not only affected the family monetarily, but has also resulted in the loss of a young man’s independence.
