A 45-year-old man was charged with stunt driving after he was observed travelling more than 70 km/h over the speed limit in Chelmsford on Aug. 21.
A member of the GSPS Traffic Management Unit 21 observed the driver at approximately 4:45pm while conducting speed enforcement on Joanette Road in Chelmsford when the officer clocked a pickup truck on radar at 121km/h in a 50km/h zone.
The 45-year-old male driver was stopped and charged with stunt driving for exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/hr.
The driver was issued summons to attend Traffic Court and had his driver’s licence suspended for seven days. His vehicle was also impounded for seven days.
Police were in the area conducting speed enforcement due to a number of calls about speeding vehicles who have been using this residential road and others in the area to bypass traffic interruptions on Highway 144 due to construction.
In addition to Joanette Road, police also charged numerous other drivers with speeding on Bradley Road and Vermillion Lake Road for speeds in the 20 – 50 km/h range over the limit.
Penalties for stunt driving, 50 km/h or over the speed limit include:
Pre-conviction: Immediate seven-day licence suspension and seven-day vehicle impoundment.
Upon conviction: $2,000 to $10,000 fine, six demerit points, up to six months jail, up to two years licence suspension for a first conviction. Driver’s insurance rates can also increase with speeding, stunt or other driving convictions.
Fine range for lesser speeds over the speed limit:
- $55.00 - $138.75 and three points for exceeding the speed limit by 16 to 29 km/h
- $220.00 - $359.00 and four points for exceeding the speed limit by 30 to 49 km/h
