After one citizen attempted to feed a bear in the Ramsey View Court area yesterday, and then a second threatened to leave out a bowl of antifreeze for the animal, Greater Sudbury Police are strongly discouraging the public from taking these kinds of actions.

The incident began with a bear rummaging through garbage during the morning of Aug. 31 in the Ramsey View Court area.

“An area resident went outside and attempted to feed the bear food,” a press release said. “This type of gesture towards a bear is incredibly dangerous and people need to keep in mind that these are wild animals that need to be avoided.

“A second citizen in the area threatened to leave a bowl of antifreeze out for the bear to drink in order to harm it. Windshield washer fluid contains, among other things, ethylene glycol. It is extremely dangerous for humans and all wildlife if they were to ingest it.”

The press release went on to say that there are criminal consequences — causing unnecessary animal suffering — if people were to poison a bear in such a manner.

Greater Sudbury Police have euthanized three bears found in urban areas of the city over the past week.
