The North East Region Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said it's proud to commemorate 400 Years of French Presence in Ontario.

The Franco-Ontario flag was raised for the first time in the region at the University of Sudbury 40 years ago on Sept. 25, 1975.

Detachment members across the North East Region are proud to pay homage to Franco-Ontarians, to remember their history and the advances they made, a press release said.

The OPP is encouraging members of northern communities to check with their local detachment for events taking place in their area such flag-raisings or open houses, partnering with existing events in their community.

The North East Region OPP has 22 detachment locations in designated French Language Service Areas as defined by the Act.

The 142 uniform and civilian employees in positions designated as bilingual can offer services in English and French.

The goal of the French Language Services Act is to have French-language services as equally accessible as English-language services in designated areas.

The North East Region OPP said in a press release it's confident that they meet this standard most of the time, but do acknowledge it must continue to work to improve French-language capabilities.
