Nebraska motorist caught driving dangerously near Nairn

At around 7:35 a.m. Sept. 25, officers from the Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 17, in the Township of Nairn.

At around 7:35 a.m. Sept. 25, officers from the Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 17, in the Township of Nairn.

Investigation revealed a black SUV was westbound on Highway 17 being operated in an erratic manner, travelling at high speeds and passing other westbound vehicles on the right shoulder of the roadway.

As a result of the investigation, police were able to locate and stop the involved vehicle at the intersection of Highway 17 and Highway 6.

A 49-year-old man from Ogallala, Nebraska, was arrested and charged with the following:

-Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, contrary to the Criminal Code.
-Race a Motor Vehicle, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

The man's Nebraska driver’s licence was suspended for seven days and the vehicle he was operating was impounded for seven days.

The accused will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola, on Dec. 1, to answer to his charges.

Every person convicted of Race a Motor Vehicle is liable to a fine of not less than $2,000 and not more than $10,000 or to imprisonment for a term of not more than six months, or to both, in addition to his or her driver’s licence being suspended.
