The Greater Sudbury Police Service is praising the skill of its service dog after the animal tracked a suspect for several kilometres on Tuesday, before routing him out of his hiding place.

At around 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 24, police were called to a two-vehicle motor vehicle collision on Falconbridge Road in Garson.

By the time police arrived, one of the drivers had already fled the scene — on foot, no less.

So, police did what police do in these types of situations: They called in a dog.

So, Scout (and his handler) did what police service dogs do in these types of situations: They put a nose to the ground and started working.

For about 35 minutes, Scout and his handler pursued the male driver’s scent over kilometre after kilometre of bush and residential neighbourhoods until they found the man cowering in an attempt to hide.

Needless to say, the man was arrested.

He’s been charged with:

  • Fail to Remain at Collision - Section 252 - Criminal Code of Canada
  • Breach of Probation - Section 733.1 - Criminal Code of Canada
  • Drive Motor Vehicle – No Licence - Section 32(1) - Highway Traffic Act of Ontario
  • Careless Driving - Section 130 - Highway Traffic Act of Ontario

There were no serious injuries as a result of the collision, police said.
