A mother and son were rescued by Greater Sudbury Police Jan. 10 after the woman's snowmobile went through the ice in a swamp.

Police received a call at 5:50 p.m., stating that the woman's machine was stuck in the swamp in between Garson and Hanmer. Her son had travelled to the area and attempted to free the snowmobile.

“The caller and her son were located six kilometres from the nearest roadway and both were escorted by police snowmobile to EMS, where they were taken to the hospital for exposure,” a press release said.

“The snowmobile trail where the rider became stuck was leading directly to Garson Lake and over a body of water. The rider ventured out on her own despite the inclement weather and freezing temperatures.”

Greater Sudbury Police have issued a reminder that local snowmobile trails remain closed, and hidden dangers lie just below the newly-fallen snow.
