A 26-year-old man made matters worse Saturday evening when he tried to free his truck, which was stuck on Whitewater Lake, by using a backhoe.

The backhoe sunk into the ice, police said.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service found out about the incident Sunday morning after receiving a tip from a citizen.

Police and emergency response services responded quickly, thinking someone may have been stuck in the backhoe. But it was empty.

The owner of the backhoe failed to inform police it was stuck in a local lake.

“Citizens are reminded to call police if their vehicle goes through the ice so we are aware,” said a police press release. “Also, if you own a backhoe keep it off the ice.”
