Two Greater Sudbury Police officers, who were suspended with pay from work earlier this year following multiple charges of misconduct, have resigned from their positions.

Staff Sgt. David Treitz and Const. Shelley Roy, who are married, both resigned from the service Nov. 2 during a tribunal hearing looking into the charges against Treitz. A police tribunal is held when allegations of misconduct are made against an officer.

All charges have been dropped against the officers following their resignations.

Treitz, a 24-year veteran with the police service, was facing 10 counts of discredible conduct, two counts of corrupt practice, one count of insubordination and one count of neglect of duty. The allegations date back to March 2007, all to which Treitz had pleaded not guilty.

According to media reports, evidence presented at the tribunal, which began in July, showed that Treitz, 46, was “overbearing and tyrannical towards other officers.” He was also accused of using police computers inappropriately and checking on reports other officers filed about his conduct, the report stated.

Roy, who was with the police service for about 14 years, was facing seven counts of discredible conduct, two counts of insubordination, one count of corrupt practice and one count of neglect of duty. Her resignation came prior to the start of the police tribunal looking into her charges.

Chief of Police Frank Elsner said “a mutual resolution” was reached between the Greater Sudbury Police Service and Treitz and Roy. “As part of that, they have tendered their resignations,” he added.

However, Elsner said he was unable to discuss the details of the resolution.
