Third teen dies after Hwy. 17 crash

A third person has died as a result of a collision on Highway 17 which occurred near Hagar just before 6 p.m. Jan. 3. Nineteen-year-old Hillary Afelski of Adamaston-Bromerly Township, Ont. died in hospital earlier this afternoon (Jan. 4).

Nineteen-year-old Hillary Afelski of Adamaston-Bromerly Township, Ont. died in hospital earlier this afternoon (Jan. 4).

She was the driver of a minivan which crossed the centre line, and struck an oncoming Jeep.

Two passengers in the minivan — 18-year-old Keegan Melville of Horton Township, Ont. and 19-year-old Zabrina Rekowski of Renfrew, Ont. — died Jan. 3.

The other passenger in the minivan, 19-year-old Emily Olmstead, of Whitewater Region Township, Ont., was hospitalized.

The two people in the Jeep, 72-year-old Walter Rancourt and 71-year-old Patricia Rancourt, both of Sturgeon Falls, Ont., were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The highway was closed until just before 2 a.m. Jan. 4 as the OPP investigated the collision.
