The Ontario National Training Centre, along with partners House of Kin and Greater Sudbury Police Services Chief's Youth Initiative Fund, announced the upcoming fundraiser and boxing event, United in Sport, which will take place May 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Caruso Club.

National team boxers, including Sudbury's 2007 and 2008 Canadian Middleweight Female Champion, Amber Konikow, will box against 2006 World Champion Lekha Kozhummel Chettadi and her team from India. This will be the first time the Indian team will be boxing in Canada. The boxers are preparing to attend the 2008 Senior Women's Boxing Championship in China this fall.

"Bringing the world's best to Sudbury to box with our own champions is great for all the athletes, the up-and-coming athletes and for our community," said Gord Apolloni, head coach.

Funds raised from this event will be donated to the House of Kin and the Ontario National Training Centre. The House of Kin provides low cost accommodation to family members of medical patients who travel to Sudbury for treatment.
The Ontario National Training Centre has coached world junior champions, provincial champions, Olympic team members as well as Olympic and Commonwealth medalists.

"It's a thrill to host the world's best here in Sudbury," said GSPS Chief Ian Davidson.

"And to have our own world renowned champions making opportunities for our young future champions. This event is about champions in sport and champions in fighting for a life after cancer."

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with an open bar. Admission is $20 per person or $500 for a table of six. For more information contact Gord Apolloni at 674-2693.
