Track North Athletic Club's Ross Proudfoot finished 14th in the men's 5,000-metre race, held July 24 at the IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships in Moncton, N.B.
Proudfoot's finishing time of 15:3.13 was well off his personal best of 14:43 set three weeks ago at the Canadian championships. The race was won by Kenya's David Kiprotich-Bett in a time of 13:23.76.
"I basically over-hydrated prior to the race as I tried to adjust for the hot temperatures, and it led to a cramp in my side around the 2,000-metre mark,” Proudfoot said in a press release. “From that point on, I was unable to surge or maintain my pace.
“Despite not hitting the time I would have liked, I was extremely proud to race for Canada in front of a stadium cheering me through every lap. This entire week has been simply amazing — being part of a world class event and competing against the best in the world is an experience that will only help me moving foward."
Proudfoot's coach, Darren Jermyn commented: "The race unfolded as expected with the top seeded runners from Kenya, Ethiopia and Morocco surging to the front, and Ross did a great job tucking in with the chase group. He hit his first two kilometers on his projected goal pace but it was obvious he was struggling physically after that as he didn't have his normal smooth rhythm."
Proudfoot will complete his season with a 1,500-metre race at the Ontario Junior Championships being held in Sudbury on Aug. 14 and 15.
