The ceremony, which is set to take place at 10 a.m., will include a proclamation by Mayor John Rodriguez, designating August Ontario Summer Games Month in the City of Greater Sudbury. The official medals of the 2010 Games will also be unveiled.
The winners of three Games-related contests — Passport to Sport, Be the Future, and Time Well Spent — will be announced at the ceremony as well.
“I am very proud that our city is hosting the 2010 Summer Games,” Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci stated in a press release. “This event will provide us with an opportunity to support young athletes as well as showcase our city to the rest of the province.”
The opening ceremonies are set to take place Aug. 10 at the newly renovated Laurentian University track, beginning at 7 p.m.
Two local sports icons will lead the open ceremonies. Tessa Bonhomme, a 2010 Olympic gold medallist, and Nick Foligno, a member of the NHL's Ottawa Senators, will welcome the athletes from all over Ontario in the only event of the Games that will see all the athletes together in one venue.
