Spain's victory at the FIFA world cup has inspired young soccer players the world over, according to Sudbury MP Glenn Thibeault.

The NDP sports critic said there should be a long-term vision for soccer in Canada.

"One day, I would like to take out my Canadian flag and wear a Canadian jersey to support a Canadian team in the World Cup," he said in a press release.

Thibeault said many Canadians long for a competitive team of their own, but structural, financial, organizational and infrastructure problems prevent a Canadian team from taking the field.

"The key to success is setting realistic goals and achieving them," he said. "We can’t start dreaming about hosting the World Cup if we have no long-term plans for improving our players and our infrastructure, including stadiums that meet FIFA criteria. We need to invest more now, especially in developing young players."

Thibeault made four suggestions for improving soccer in Canada:

  • Give coaches more training;
  • Provide better infrastructure;
  • Improve coordination of competitions;
  • Invest more in soccer.

Sport Canada invested $1.76 million in soccer in 2009, according to a press release from Thibeault. In comparison, Australia spent $4 million on its soccer federation and $1.3 million for university and college programs during the same period of time.

“During the 2010 Winter Olympics, we welcomed the world and performed well," Thibeault said. "We achieved this by investing more and investing smarter. We can use the same strategy for soccer."

  • andre, just because soccer is popular, because it takes little skill, doesn't mean it needs federal propping up. By your logic, it should be the #1 sport in Canada.
    But if you wanna play that game, Hopscotch is played by more children than ANY game in the world. You want to fund a national league for that too?
    Face it. Soccer is a low skill game when compared to OUR national sport, hockey.
    Bottom line is we are a winter nation.(How did Sweeden and Finland do in the last World Cup?) The attempt to force transplant soccer here has, and will always fail. It simply is a foreign game that doesn't appeal to the action thirsty markets here. We need to focus on what we do best. Not divert funding to a once-in-every-4-year fad.
    It has nothing to do with obsession with hockey. It has to do with a passion for real sports. Ones without flagrant dives, fake injuries, phantom overtimes, and boring stretches of ball tag.

  • My god you are unbelievable....do you know that there are more people enrolled in soccer programs than hockey! Get with it! I know lot's of kids who would rather play soccer than hockey! Canada should have a team to qualify for the world cup... all they need is good organisation to bring the youth through. Right now all the best players go abroad, and yes Canada does have some good skillful players. I watch the youngsters and some show great promise and enthusiasm.
    If small and poor countries can qualify...then Canada should have no problems! What is it with your obsession with nothing but hockey! I would be proud as would others to watch our team in the world cup.
    Not usually a great fan of Mr Thibault but this time i will give him credit. Stop it with this selfish attitude of hockey is our game. Would'nt it be good to have a country known for other sports other than anything remotely commected with ice! Play your hockey but let's not forget that most people who come to live in Canada want to play the beautiful game.... look at the history of the sport!
    You are right about the stadiums... that is not where money needs to be invested at first. You have to start at grass root levals with schools and better coaching. Get some local semi pro teams started in Sudbury.. along the lines of the Sudbury Wolves. Stop making excuses about the climate, there are other countries who manage perfectly well.

  • Mr. Thibeault is partially right. Although building huge stadiums is not a priority, unless they are funded by teams, sponsorsn or through private-public-partnerships, Canada should look at increasing youth participation is soccer as well as other sports. Soccer is already by far the most popular sport among our youth. HOwever, participation levels drop off dramatically when the kids reach their teens. Soccer has a huge support level however this passion among the kids ends too quickly. Seeing kids remain active should be encouraged and Thibeault is on the right track if he is promoting continued fitness and physical activity.

  • I never watch soccer.I don't like it at all.It is not a Canadian game.Our game is hockey and it is a real game,and I also like and watch football,baseball,boxing,lacrosse.I also never watch golf,basketball and tennis.The best game is certainly Hockey.

  • Hockey is OUR game. The limited hype around the World Cup will pass. 4 more years will go by until the small segment of soccer fans get all excited again.

    Lets not mistake a momentary fad that reoccurs every 4 years with real support.
    Canada doesn't have the climate or nation wide support to have a country wide soccer initiative. This is just more bandwagon jumping by the desperate NDP.

  • I think we have other areas to be more concerned with. Nothing like building a couple 80,000 seat soccer stadiums never to be used again except for N.D.P. rallies.Just like the Olympic Stadium. Sitting empty. Hosting the World Cup is like the N.D.P. forming a national government.(just dreaming)

  • you're gonna pay for it, all by yourself.

  • And who does Mr. Thibeault suggest pay for this investment?
    How about each member of the 3 main levels of government give up 10% of their salaries, expense budgets and pensions and all proceeds be used to fund all amateur sports and recreation programs across the country? That should about do it!
    Just another example of a slimy politician trying to ride the wave and get some free publicity. Just like he did with the Vale/USW situation.
