It might well be one of the most scenic vistas that the cyclists who compete regularly on the Ontario Cup road race circuit will visit, but there was precious little sightseeing to be done at the Jewel in the Wilderness races.

Once again this year, Elliot Lake played host to an event that drew almost 200 athletes from across the province, testing their cycling skill against the rugged northern Ontario landscape.

The field included a group of nine riders representing the Sudbury Cycling Club, with Laura Haapamaki topping the local results. An Espanola native, Haapamaki finished first in the 3.5-km Hill Climb race, crossing the line 25 seconds ahead of Kim Chapman.

Normand Richard picked up a bronze medal in the road race (Sportif category), while James Orton (Cadet U-17 Road Race) and Kerry Abols (Master A Over 30 Hill Climb) registered matching seventh-place finishes.

The local crew also featured Frank Battaion, Derek D’Angelo, Rob Rice, James Larmer and Trevor Rickwood.
